GOLF COURSE CONDITIONS by Jim Hess
After a stretch of extreme heat and humidity I hope everyone is enjoying the unexpected break in our summer weather. With night temperatures in the 60’s and daytime highs in the 80’s, the golf course is receiving a much-needed rest. The weather center predicts ten days of below normal temperatures and possible light to heavy rainfall. We’ll take all we can get! Each season our Superintendent goes on “greens watch” after the 4th of July through early September when the severe heat normally ends. Bentgrass greens are extremely challenged when the temperatures exceed 100. It is easy to see some areas of heat stress particularly on the back nine greens. Some of the weakness is normal summer stress but in a few areas, it is also a reaction to a chemical application which appears to have weakened and damaged the bentgrass. Where the bentgrass is thin you see the invasive crabgrass appear. The weeds are being treated and with the cooler weather I can already see some improvement in the bentgrass. We will be laying in some new sod before August 10th in a few small areas which are not responding. Our Superintendent’s batting average when it comes to decisions affecting our golf course is very good! I don’t like it, but I accept that human error does happen. We are reacting to the challenges and the course will be back in the condition we expect very soon. The front nine greens are in great condition; feel free to play the front nine twice for the next few weeks while the back nine recovers. As always, do not hesitate to contact myself or Alan in the Golf Shop with any questions you may have.
CLUBHOUSE REMODELING ON SCHEDULE by Jim Hess
Our designer submitted her final plans and selections last month which were reviewed and approved by both the Club owners and our Advisory Board. Carpets, chairs, tables and a couple of fun design elements have been ordered and the entire Dining Room area will begin to take shape very soon. If the carpet arrives as promised, installation is scheduled for Monday/Tuesday, August 14th and 15th. Workers will be removing the old and installing the new carpet all day Monday and through the night. The dining room andkitchen will be closed to normal member traffic on Tuesday August 15th. Cold drinks will be available in the Golf Shop. The chairs and tables will be arriving over the following 30 days. I believe the project, funded primarily by member contributions, should be complete by the middle of October.
It is also great to see the work progressing on the South face of the clubhouse building. New cedar siding is being installed over new plywood sheathing which replaces the 35-year-old siding. This project along with new paint on the entire southern exposure will be complete by mid-August.
